How much growth does your crop get out of every drop?

A plant draws up a lot of water, and only a small fraction of it - a few percent - ever ends up as biomass. The rest does its job cooling the crop and carrying nutrients, then leaves as transpiration. So one question matters more than almost any other: of all the water the plant takes up, how many grams of growth do you get per litre?
That's water-use efficiency, or WUE - growth per litre of water taken up. And it's the line between a crop that's just surviving the climate and one that's turning it into yield.
wue most efficient day

Here's the useful part

WUE isn't a fixed trait. It rises and falls with how well your climate and irrigation match what the plant needs, moment to moment. Same crop, same greenhouse and the efficiency can still shift from one day to the next.

That's the opportunity. If you can measure biomass and water uptake continuously, you can finally see that efficiency as it moves and see what pushes it up or down: the climate setpoints you choose, and when you give that first irrigation of the day. And what you can see, you can improve.
