What is your biomass really telling you?

Forget the textbook for a second. In a greenhouse, biomass is just the plant's current weight and you can measure it continuously by sitting the crop on a load cell. No estimates, no models. The plant tells you its weight, second by second.


Why bother? Because that weight is the most honest summary you have of what the crop is doing. Everything, light, water, climate, eventually shows up here, on the scale. The catch: most of that weight is not growth. It is water. Which is exactly where this gets interesting.


If you watched your crop's weight through a single day, you'd see it rise and fall constantly. Why? Because two things happen at once: the plant takes water up through the roots, and it loses water through transpiration. The weight you see is the balance between the two.


In the morning, as light and demand build, the plant often loses water faster than it can replace it and the weight dips. At night it recovers. That daily rhythm is not noise. It is the clearest signal you have of whether the crop is comfortable or under stress. Climate data shows you the environment. The weight curve shows you the plant's response to it.

Now let's see it in real data

Three lines tell the story.

The green line is the raw fresh weight, measured every 5 seconds. You'll see spikes in it, those are harvests and leaf removals, physical interventions that affect the weight directly. The brown line shows the cumulative biomass at the daily level. And the yellow line is radiation, the light the crop received, which is here because light is the primary indicator.

That cumulative daily value, in kilograms, is the number that correlates most strongly with how much you'll harvest two weeks from now. It won't tell you the exact amount, but if you produce less biomass this week than in previous weeks, you can reasonably expect your harvest to be lower in two weeks' time.

Now look across the days. There was a clear difference in light, and yet on some days the crop produced nearly its best biomass even with lower light. Those are the relationships worth understanding. You'd expect the day with the most light to give the best biomass, but look closely and that's not where the most biomass is. What does that mean? On that day, you weren't efficient. You need to find the cause, and that's exactly what we help you do.

The brightest day wasn't the best day

This view zooms in on the numbers. Each line represents one day, and by the end of the day you can read off exactly how much biomass the crop produced. The spread across the week is 23%, from the weakest to the strongest day. Light varied too, and light is the primary explanation for most of that spread.

But look at the top two days and compare them to their radiation values. June 8th had the most light: 2,090 J/cm2. It produced 1.68 kg of biomass. June 9th had nearly 900 J/cm2 less radiation, finishing at 1,253 J/cm2. It produced 1.9 kg. That is the best day of the week, achieved on significantly less light than the brightest day.

The difference between first and second place in biomass is meaningful. The difference in the light they had to work with is enormous. On June 9th, the crop used what it had with exceptional efficiency. On June 8th, with all that extra light available, something was holding it back.

What was it? That is exactly the kind of question this data is designed to help you answer. And finding that answer is where the real gains are.

So what does this one week tell us?

The plant's weight is the most honest summary you have of what the crop is doing. Everything, light, water, climate, eventually shows up on the scale. And the cumulative biomass you build day by day is the number that points, two weeks ahead, to what you'll harvest.

But the most important lesson is this: the day with the most light wasn't the day with the most biomass. June 9th produced the most, 1.9 kg, on far less radiation than June 8th, which had the most light but only reached 1.68 kg. On that brighter day, the light simply wasn't used as efficiently.

That gap, between the light you receive and the biomass you actually build, is where the opportunity lies. It has a cause, and once you can see it, you can find it. That's exactly what we help you do.
